NAMI (the National Alliance on Mental Illness) is the nation's largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to improving the lives of the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. Since NAMI's beginning in 1979, we have established ourselves through dedication, commitment and an unceasing belief in our mission to strengthen communities and help those in need. The heart of NAMI is our unrivaled grassroots network of volunteers in communities across the nation. Through our united support, education, advocacy and awareness efforts, NAMI is at the forefront, a recognized force in urging new ideas and solutions to improve lives. 

NAMI currently has an opening for a National Director, Development. The Director will provide leadership over all aspects of the individual donor program and work to meet or exceed individual donor revenue targets. He or she will be responsible for the overall direction and strategic success of the individual donor program. 


  • Provides leadership and strategic direction for delivering on NAMI's individual donor revenue targets
  • Provides the revenue base for the organization to operate
  • Conducts personal outreach through visits, calls, and emails to prospective and major donors
  • Prepares proposals and other funding materials
  • Plans and executes an annual fundraising plan that supports the target
  • Identifies and implements fundraising strategies
  • Ensures development operations follow best practices
  • Leads and manages a team of development professionals
  • Engages with the Board of Directors, particularly the Development Committee
  • Provides limited fundraising assistance to state and local NAMI organizations
  • As a member of the Executive team, engages in defining the organization's vision and direction 


  • Advanced Fundraising skills
  • Bachelor's Degree, Master's degree preferred
  • More than 10 years related experience
  • Computer skills in MS Office, relational database, and public records search
  • Excellent skill in communication in English, both written and verbal 

This position is based in Arlington, VA.
