We currently have an opening for a Staff Accountant. The Staff Accountant is responsible for facilitating the day to day activities of the accounting department; evaluating and assigning the coding of disbursements and receipts; insuring proper procedures are being followed and appropriate internal controls are in place; and completing portions of Month End Closing. This individual will report to the Controller.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The actions of the Staff Accountant should provide the necessary support for Controller in producing financial records that are fairly and accurately presented
  • Staff Accountant's duties will be completed in timely manner to help meet the day to day requirements of the department
  • Review disbursements and receipts to make sure they are properly coded, verify that we have the proper supporting documentation, and direct disbursements to the proper manager to approve the disbursement
  • Responsible for tracking and reporting on all grants. Liaise with departments on grant spend down vs. budget. Verify all grants are properly coded and have proper supporting documentation.
  • Record month end journal entries
  • Prepare and reconcile assigned general ledger schedules by monthly closing date
  • Prepare invoices
  • Record Membership refunds/credits when requested.
  • Make Monthly Membership Distribution
  • Supervise maintenance of certain accounting files and records for accounting projects
  • Create monthly Cash Report and Online Giving Report.
  • Support CFO on state charity and corporate registrations.
  • Help establish and maintain internal controls.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting
  • CPA designation or candidate
  • An understanding of GAAP, Internal Controls, and other Non-profit Accounting Aspects
  • 1-3 years of related experience
  • Experience and familiarity with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook
  • Experience and familiarity with integrated accounting software
  • The ability to navigate different databases and financial websites
  • Professional written and oral communication (in English) among co-workers, affiliates, vendors and donors

This position is based in Arlington, Va.
