What started as a small group of families gathered around a kitchen table in 1979 has blossomed into the nation's leading voice on mental health. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is the nation's largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. 

Today, we are an alliance of more than 500 local affiliates, state organizations and a national office who work in communities across the United States to raise awareness and provide support and education that was not previously available to those in need. NAMI advocates for all who are affected by mental illness, both the individuals and the people in their lives. In particular, we work to address disparities and injustices and to promote dignity and inclusion for all people with mental illness and their families. In addition to being advocates, we educate, we listen, and we lead as evidenced by our public awareness campaigns, the range of numerous programs we provide, and our strong public policy.

We currently have an opening for a Director of Capacity Building in our Field Advancement Department. This role directs the strategy, design, delivery and evaluation of efforts with leaders of NAMI State Organizations (NSOs) and NAMI Affiliates (NAs), positioning these leaders to guide and operate their organizations to deliver on the NAMI mission.The Director is also responsible for working closely with other departments in the national organization to strengthen and integrate the work of building capacity across NAMI's extensive alliance.

STRATEGIC GOALS:

This position is expected to:

  • Architect and implement a sustainable approach for facilitating organizational health among a large network of affiliated organizations
  • Develop a suite of easy to use resources and supports for NSOs and NAs
  • Create mutual learning and coaching communities and other processes so that nonprofit and NAMI best practices are freely shared, curated and adapted
  • Be a trusted and collaborative partner in strengthening our grassroots leaders and the organizations they lead

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Assess the strengths and challenges of NAMI State Organizations (NSOs) and NAMI Affiliates (NAs); develop a systemic approach to foster and track their organizational health
  • Incorporate and adapt industry best practices for nonprofit management and organization development into the team's coaching, consulting and training work
  • Ensure excellent customer service with both proactive and responsive interventions with NSO/NA leaders
  • Oversee the design, collection and curation, communication and distribution of tools, templates and trainings for building capacity in the grassroots
  • Establish protocols for implementing capacity-building efforts that scale, and are simplified and/or differentiated for a wide variety of learners
  • Use data to gauge progress, identify and address gaps, and drive decision making in capacity building efforts
  • Trouble-shoot and create solutions to harness the unique advantages of a three-part alliance
  • Manage the budget and report to the National Director and CFO on program deliverables
  • Lead and manage a distributed team; support staff in their growth and development
  • Travel occasionally for site visits, training and public speaking engagements
  • Perform other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:   

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field required; master's degree preferred
  • 8-10 years' experience with non-profit organizations in progressively more responsible leadership roles
  • Strong knowledge of and experience with implementing nonprofit and organization development best practices
  • Skilled in assessing and building the capacity of a distributed network of paid and volunteer leaders
  • Experience integrating cultural competency into all work programs and products, including building diverse teams and partnerships
  • Experience devising and using metrics to assess results
  • Minimum four years supervisory experience with proven experience building and leading strong, healthy teams
  • Skilled in building warm and strong collaborative relationships at all levels'organization, team and individual
  • Proven instructional design and delivery skills, particularly adept at converting complexity into simplicity; e-learning experience highly desired
  • Proactive and strategic; responds quickly and effectively to challenges; able to effectively shift leadership to the needs of a situation or person
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong project management skills
  • Adept at seeing the big picture while effectively managing the details
  • Proven ability to manage budgets effectively
  • Skilled with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Knowledge of a variety of nonprofit governance structures desired
