What started as a small group of families gathered around a kitchen table in 1979 has blossomed into the nation's leading voice on mental health. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is the nation's largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. 

Today, we are an alliance of hundreds of local affiliates, state organizations and a national office who work in communities across the United States to raise awareness and provide support and education that was not previously available to those in need. NAMI advocates for all who are affected by mental illness, both the individuals and the people in their lives. In particular, we work to address disparities and injustices and to promote dignity and inclusion for all people with mental illness and their families. In addition to being advocates, we educate, we listen, and we lead as evidenced by our public awareness campaigns, the range of numerous programs we provide, and our strong public policy.

We currently have an opening for a Lobbyist. The Lobbyist is responsible for advocating to promote NAMI's federal policy priorities, with a particular focus on federal appropriations. In collaboration with the Director of Legislative Affairs, the Lobbyist tracks and analyzes federal legislation, provides legislative strategy and acts as a liaison with legislative entities and influential coalitions and partners.

WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU WILL DO: 

  • Represents NAMI as a federal lobbyist
  • Assists in the development of legislative strategies around appropriations for NAMI policy priorities
  • Tracks federal legislative proposals and newly-enacted legislation of interest to NAMI
  • Researches and analyzes proposed mental health-related legislation and prepares summaries  
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with key Congressional staff to develop support for NAMI's priorities 
  • Assists in developing NAMI's federal legislative agenda
  • Participates in the preparation of issue briefs, testimony, legislative leave-behinds and other policy-related documents
  • Attends Congressional hearings, mark-ups, meetings and events
  • Develops and sustains strategic relationships with stakeholder groups, including national coalitions and advocacy organizations
  • Works with members of the Advocacy & Public Policy team to identify opportunities for strategic grassroots and grasstops interactions with Members of Congress 
  • Identifies opportunities for promoting shared legislative objectives through coalitions
  • Assists in developing tools and resources to support policy and advocacy initiatives
  • Under the direction of the Director of Public Policy, provides support to Director of Legislative Affairs and works collaboratively within the team
  • Performs other duties as assigned

WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO SUCCEED:   

  • Bachelor's degree required; advance degree preferred
  • Five to seven years professional experience in a public policy environment or relevant field
  • Federal budget and appropriations expertise
  • Desire and ability to register as a federal lobbyist, prior hill experience a plus
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Expertise in developing and maintaining excellent relationships with policymakers
  • Strong project management skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
  • Ability to research and analyze legislation and Congressional records
  • Interest in mental health policy, with experience in a connected topic impacting people with mental illness (such as criminal justice, health care, housing, child welfare or disability rights) a plus
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced work environment and meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

This position is based in Arlington, VA.
