What started as a small group of families gathered around a kitchen table in 1979 has blossomed into the nation's leading voice on mental health. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is the nation's largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. 

Today, we are an alliance of hundreds of local affiliates, state organizations and a national office who work in communities across the United States to raise awareness and provide support and education that was not previously available to those in need. NAMI advocates for all who are affected by mental illness, both the individuals and the people in their lives. In particular, we work to address disparities and injustices and to promote dignity and inclusion for all people with mental illness and their families. In addition to being advocates, we educate, we listen, and we lead as evidenced by our public awareness campaigns, the range of numerous programs we provide, and our strong public policy.

We currently have an opening for a Project Manager. The Project Manager will manage a portfolio of national level cross-departmental projects for the National Office. Projects assigned to this individual are identified by Executive and Senior Leadership as high priority and high visibility initiatives that involve multiple teams across NAMI and/or external partners. This position is responsible for the managing and overseeing of all project stages from initiation to closeout, to deliver target outcomes within scope, schedule and budget constraints. A key player in NAMI's Project Management Office, this individual will help ensure projects are successfully executed in line with NAMI's mission, strategic priorities and resource commitments.

This full time position is based in Arlington, VA.


  • Manage national level cross-departmental projects to support and achieve the organization's strategic priorities. Responsible for managing all project phases, from initiation to close-out, to deliver target outcomes within scope, budget, and schedule constraints.
  • Lead project planning sessions with project sponsor, internal and external stakeholders and project team members. Synthesize information from sponsors to accurately define scope, milestones, resource requirements and target outcomes.
  • Establish clear decision-making and communication processes for cross-functional project teams. Responsible for ensuring all work is appropriately tasked out and completed appropriately.
  • Develop comprehensive project plans that ensure all deliverables are satisfied on-time, with respect to competing organizational timelines and priorities.
  • Conduct and manage procurements with third-party vendors. Ensure seamless collaboration with project staff. Coordinate and validate timely receipt of high-quality deliverables.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive project documentation including charters, schedules, WBS, risk logs, progress reports, lessons learned and closeout reports.
  • Manage changes to the project scope, schedule and costs. Deliver quantitative and qualitative project reports for project team and Senior Leadership. Develop and implement corrective actions as needed.
  • Identify and implement process improvement strategies to support logistics and planning of the NAMI National Convention.
  • Support the development of the organization's Project Management office, standards and best practices. Provide thought leadership around project analyses and methods. Identify, propose and implement process improvement strategies across project teams and the organization.


  • Four year degree
  • Two to four years relevant work experience in nonprofit operations, project support and/or project management.
  • Strong understanding of project management methodologies and practical application in a fast-paced business environment.
  • Capable of understanding project goals and translating goals into achievable, operationalized tasks.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and prioritize tasks within time and resource constrains.
  • Ability to interface with and manage communications between internal and external stakeholders with a high level of accuracy and professionalism. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills: skilled at enriching relationships while setting effective boundaries. This individual must partner effectively with stakeholders across multiple internal departments and external organizations.
  • Cognizant of interactions between project level details and program strategy in order to be a proactive contributor to both.
  • Strong analysis and creative problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient in Office 365, SharePoint and/or other Content Management Systems
  • Experience with SmartSheet, Microsoft Project, Slack and/or other project management software required.
  • Project Management Professional Certification preferred.
  • Experience with Adobe Connect, Microsoft Teams and/or Salesforce preferred.
