What started as a small group of families gathered around a kitchen table in 1979 has blossomed into the nation's leading voice on mental health. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is the nation's largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness.

Today, we are an alliance of hundreds of local affiliates, state organizations and a national office who work in communities across the United States to raise awareness and provide support and education that was not previously available to those in need. NAMI advocates for all who are affected by mental illness, both the individuals and the people in their lives. In particular, we work to address disparities and injustices and to promote dignity and inclusion for all people with mental illness and their families. In addition to being advocates, we educate, we listen, and we lead as evidenced by our public awareness campaigns, the range of numerous programs we provide, and our strong public policy.

We currently have an opening for a Senior Manager, Justice Diversion Task Force. The Senior Manager manages and completes all aspects of assigned cross-functional projects focused on achieving NAMI's primary strategic goals (Get Help Early, Best Care Possible, and Diversion from the Justice System) through issue-specific engagement, coordination, and partnership within the organization's core advocacy programs.

Location: Arlington, VA (Currently remote due to COVID)


The Task Force Senior Manager is responsible for:

  • Collecting and utilizing data, information, narratives, and situation reports for the purpose of assisting with the management of projects that meet organizational strategic objectives
  • Managing designated resources as well as coaching and maximizing the Task Force Project Manager
  • Developing and completing all task force tactical objectives as well as the proper reporting, record keeping, and after-action requirements as assigned
  • Reporting directly to the Task Force Leader, or a designee, during the planning-to-implementation phases of each project and closely engaging the designated Board sponsor as directed
  • Performing additional tasks and duties as assigned

The Task Force Senior Manager shall:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the strategic plan and articulate its component parts within the context of all strategic priorities
  • Demonstrate an understanding of NAMI's organizational structure, external environment, partnerships and federated advocacy network
  • Demonstrate the ability to contribute to SWOT-informed tactical decisions while reinforcing strategic intent
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the roles of all assigned personnel, including job descriptions, performance evaluation measures, and HR policies


  • Bachelor's degree in a related field required; advanced degree preferred
  • 5 - 7 years' experience working in assigned issue area (justice) preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment and across functions/departments to plan and implement programs and initiatives
  • Ability to respond to and prioritize competing demands
  • Ability to respond quickly and effectively to challenges, using problem-solving and fact-finding skills
  • Sound data analysis and research skills
  • Sound organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
  • Ability to research and analyze issue-specific data, historical records, and publicly available information
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced work environment and meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

Essential functions are performed in a general office setting with low noise.
