Are you interested in making a meaningful difference in people's lives?

NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is the nation's largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness.

NAMI's Public Safety and Health Care Initiatives team serves to provide research, information, education, and curriculum to improve the mental health and wellbeing of public safety and health care professionals across the country. Additional focus includes the intersection of physical and mental health for all populations, including those with serious mental illness.

Our team is seeking interns interested in gaining experience on topics specific to the mental health of frontline populations, such as: law enforcement, fire/EMS, emergency dispatch, physicians, nurses, and physician assistants, among others. Interns should have excellent research capabilities, flexibility in focus areas, and the ability to apply critical thinking skills as they utilize information on behalf of these populations.

Please include a cover letter with your application that describes why you are interested in frontline mental health, the intersection of mental and physical health, and how your interests align with NAMI's mission.

Serving Remotely

Interns may work from their homes, apartments or dorms, and will connect with our team using phone, SMS/chat, meeting platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams, and email. Interns are required to have access to a computer with the most-recent operating system (Mac, PC or Linux) as well as high-speed internet.

Minimum Time Commitment Requirements

Please note the following time commitment requirements:

  • Summer/Fall 2021 student internships* a minimum of 15 hours per week for a minimum duration of four months (across July - December), regardless of when the goal of academic credits is achieved.

Hours of work may be flexible and include some time outside of usual office hours. Office hours are generally 9:00 5:00 Mon-Fri, Eastern Standard Time.

*To receive academic credit, student interns often seek to work 10-20 hours per week during the semester. It is recommended that applicants work with their Academic Advisor regarding the option to earn academic credit for a NAMI Public Safety and Health Care internship.
