We currently have an opening for Director of Public Policy. This position is responsible for developing and articulating policy positions that reflect NAMI's mission and priorities. The Director is also responsible for facilitating strategic relationships and for expanding and enhancing NAMI's policy achievements. 


NAMI has a dynamic and collaborative policy team that is driven to address injustices and build better lives for people with mental health conditions and their families. Your work will help define and advance NAMI's policy priorities and support the growth of NAMI's advocacy movement.


This position is expected to:

  • Lead research and analysis of mental health-related policy issues and make recommendations regarding policy positions and messaging.
  • Develop and help execute strategies for key policy initiatives
  • Develop strong and collaborative relationships with federal agencies, leading national partner organizations, coalitions, searchers and other stakeholders to advance shared goals 


  • Leads research and analysis of federal and state legislation and regulations to inform policy positions and priorities, especially Medicaid financing and coverage
  • Leads strategy for and manages key multi-faceted initiatives, including alternative payment models for evidence-based mental health interventions, Medicaid and non-Medicaid state funding, mental health coverage and parity
  • Develops strong relationships and works collaboratively with stakeholders, including leading national partner organizations, coalitions, think tanks and federal agencies
  • Leads analysis of and makes recommendations on state Medicaid waivers
  • Develops effective strategies and tactics in response to time-sensitive policy issues and opportunities
  • Leads advocacy initiative on quality measures for mental health care
  • Leads analysis and strategy regarding mental health coverage, including parity requirements and access to mental health services and supports
  • Develops policy briefs, reports, blogs, op-eds and other policy content
  • Serves as an expert consultant to media and elected officials on mental health policy issues
  • Represents NAMI and presents on policy issues at state, regional and national meetings
  • Facilitates effective inter-team and cross-team collaboration
  • Manages budgets for policy initiatives and reports to national director on program deliverables
  • Assists with funding proposals and grant reports, including meeting with funders
  • Leads and manages direct reports, including facilitating their professional growth and development
  • Performs other duties as assigned


  • 10+ years' experience preferred, but will consider less if experienced in mental health financing, coverage and/or quality
  • Advanced degree required or bachelor's degree and equivalent experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Minimum 4 years' supervisory experience
  • Extensive knowledge of mental health policy and financing
  • Knowledge of state and federal legislative processes
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative
  • Proven ability to effectively manage budgets and program goals and outcomes
  • Ability to respond quickly and effectively to time-sensitive issues
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong project management and leadership skills
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment and across teams
  • Flexibility and ability to respond to and prioritize competing demands
  • Demonstrated experience in forging collaborative and effective relationships
