What started as a small group of families gathered around a kitchen table in 1979 has blossomed into the nation's leading voice on mental health. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is the nation's largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. 

Today, we are an alliance of more than 800 local affiliates, state organizations and a national office who work in communities across the United States to raise awareness and provide support and education that was not previously available to those in need. NAMI advocates for all who are affected by mental illness, both the individuals and the people in their lives. In particular, we work to address disparities and injustices and to promote dignity and inclusion for all people with mental illness and their families. In addition to being advocates, we educate, we listen, and we lead as evidenced by our public awareness campaigns, the range of numerous programs we provide, and our strong public policy.

We currently have an opening for a Managing Editor, Content Marketing. The Managing Editor, Content Marketing will apply masterful storytelling skills that appeal to a variety of target audiences. Through expert writing and editing, the editor will create and maintain a cohesive and unique voice for our growing brand and develop compelling, insightful stories that engage readers at various touchpoints in the user journey. The Managing Editor will oversee tone and voice for the brand, coordinate content for and supervise the day-to-day operations of multiple print, online and digital publications and platforms across a broad range of projects from multi-channel campaigns to individual pieces of content across multiple formats, such as website copy, blog articles, emails, white papers, case studies, contributed articles, video storytelling and more.


Content Strategy and Production

  • Manages overall content strategy, ideation and positioning across print, digital and Web communications
  • Manages the Advocate, NAMI's flagship magazine, published two times per year; duties include story generation, writing/editing, printing, distribution, promotion and evaluation through reader surveys
  • Manages the NAMI Blog, published several times weekly; duties include managing schedule, writing original stories and editing submissions from guest authors
  • Manages NAMI Now, a monthly e-newsletter
  • Manages NAMI News, published several times weekly; duties include managing schedule and editing submissions from staff
  • Establishes strategy and quality assurance processes for all content on website. Trains staff on web writing best practices, reviews and updates content periodically and coordinates with Web staff to ensure usability and technical functionality
  • Writes and/or edits blogs, feature stories, Web pages, e-newsletters and other publications
  • Solicits content from colleagues, volunteers/interns and external submitters and assigns work across platforms
  • Manages organizational editorial calendar and ensures content submissions are received on time
  • Manages advertising program and ad sales opportunities

Marketing Support

  • Tracks, analyzes and reports on trends in data for publications, website and public awareness campaigns
  • Conceptualizes marketing strategies and supports publishing duties associated with public awareness campaigns
  • Supports organizational marketing priorities such as membership, fundraising and convention
  • Coordinates with manager of social media on strategies, schedules, creation of assets/graphics, content, and digital advertising (e.g., Google Adwords) as appropriate

Editorial Integrity

  • Maintains editorial style guide and trains staff on usage
  • Assists in evaluating finalized copy for compliance with policies, style and tone
  • Edits publications such as reports, fact sheets, Web pages, and digital newsletters
  • Ensures editorial quality by training staff about communications policies and best practices
  • Develops consistent processes for and advises on communications platforms throughout the organization, including e-newsletters, advocacy alerts and fundraising appeals

Team Support

  • Documents standard operating procedures, submission guidelines and best practices for key communications functions
  • Provides back-up help for essential functions across the Marketing and Communications team
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Bachelor's degree in relevant professional field with a minimum of 8 years relevant work experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience, including a relevant certification. Master's degree or certification in a relevant field preferred
  • Mastery of written English; certification in plain language writing highly desirable
  • Professional experience in a public health company or related non-profit, mission-driven organization
  • Knowledge of print industry's prepress standards
  • Knowledge of editorial standards of style (AP preferred)
  • Excellent writing, proofreading, copyediting, and substantive editing skills
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Proficiency with desktop publishing software and photo editing software (Adobe Creative Suite) preferred, not required
  • Proficiency with Web content management systems, project management software, digital marketing tools and analysis tools (e.g., Kentico, SalesForce/Marketing Cloud, HTML, Smartsheet, Google Analytics)
  • Detail-oriented with flexible, positive attitude; strong interpersonal skills; able to work independently on self-directed projects and collaborate with teams and internal clients; comfortable in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities and multiple deadlines
